NOTES OF THE TURF.
The Dill starting machine is being used at
Lexington.
After the Kentucky Derby, Mr. M. F. Dwyer
$7500 for Ben Eder. The offer was declined.
John Rodegap’s colt Sumatra by Vocalic— La
Sorella died at Lexington a day or two ago.
Dunois is doing well again and will carry the
Scoggan colors again in the races of the next
ten days.
Aqueduct sought the off days of the Morris
Park meeting— the Mondays and Fridays be-
tween May 12 and June 2.
Bill McGuigan is preparing Ben Eder for a
bruising race for the Clark Stakes, and says that
he will bet on Ben Eder defeating Ben Brush.
The application for reinstatement made by R.
J. Hutchison and Jockey J. B. Slack were
refused.
C. T. Patterson’s, Suisun, and M. F. Dwyer’s
recent purchase, Cleophus, are to run a match
race at five furlongs, 115 pounds each, for $2,250
—$750 a side and $750 added, at Louisville.
The Jockey Club stewards have declined to
reconsider their decision of Jan. 31, under
which the entries of F, D. Weir and M. Daly
were ordered to be refused on all courses racing
under the jurisdiction of the Jockey Club.
The supposition is generally held that Star
Tobacco and Horseshoe Tobacco were so named
because they are “plugs.” It is to be so hoped.
Such names attached to winners is full of jar
and low class.

THE FLAG SAVES EVANATUS.
Owing to one or two horses being left at the
post recently at Sheffield, the advance flag was
called into requisition yesterday as well as the
machine. It was just as well that it was, for,
in the mile handicap, the first time the machine
snapped Evanatus. with Dorsey up, wheeled
around exactly as he had done with Irving last
Saturday, and he would have been left had not
the horses been recalled. As it was he got off
last, but, running kindly, won, beating Hi
Henry easily, the son (»f Big Henry astonishing
his friends by his game finish over a distance
' supposed to be not his forte.
The day was warm, attendance large, and the
track fast. Two Indiana records, the mile of
1 \ilV% and the five furlongs of 1 :01^ were
equalled by Evanatus and Remedy respectively.
Only two favorites, Pinchback in the first and
Outgo in the last races won. All the other win-
ners were backed. There were only eleven
regular books and two field books on, but they
did a good business. Irving rode two winners.
Pinchback had only a poor lot to beat in the
opening event and he won easily.
In the 2-year-old race the starting machine
was dispensed with as neither Terrific or Aceta
had ever been to the post or even been schooled
at starting. Terrific was made a warm favorite
but two of Tully Coulter’s recently sold to Celia
& Sippy and Ruddy Bros, finished first and
second. Mike Kelly was the favorite for the
six furlongs selling, but he was not in the first
three, Warren Point winning in a drive from
Denizette and Paskola.
May Fern who appeared in John Brenock’s
colors for the first time, was favorite in the five
furlongs. The second was the best she could
do. Remedy racing over her all the way.
The last event at seven furlongs was a gallop
for Outgo. He might have been pressed had
the start been a better one, Belvour getting off
very badly.
